AOL's Tegic, IBM Team On Mobile Java

A bundle with the Tegic T9 predictive text software and the IBM WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment will debut as T9 Run later in 2006.

IBM's Java-powered micro environment carries a faster way to do mobile instant messaging and email to developers building next generation applications for mobile phones. AOL announced at the 3GSM World Conference that software from its Tegic unit would be part of a bundle with IBM's J2ME platform.

This combined platform, called T9 Run, will allow developers to create applications that run in T9 Run's virtual machine. The underlying hardware for the mobile handset can be from any manufacturer that utilizes the platform.

Developers can craft messaging applications to run in that space and take advantage of Tegic's T9 software. Thus richer applications can be built, but the speed of entering text remains quick under T9. Also, the new model offers a plug-in architecture to handset manufacturers for supporting third-party embedded software.

"The speed, memory usage and compatibility of IBM WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment will make T9 Run a stand out in the market. Together, we will make it easier than ever for mobile users around the world to enjoy popular data services," said Bill Schwebel, President, Tegic Communications.
